The Area Director, serving both on the Council and in the US SAILING House of Delegates as prescribed in the US SAILING bylaws, oversees and ensures the successful commission of Area responsibilities.  The Area Director is a most important link in the US SAILING structure.

1. Area directors oversee and are responsible for the satisfactory conduct of the RSA and Area championships, which produce competitors to the US SAILING national championships. This is an extremely important function for the Area Director in preserving the quality of the championships.

2. Area Directors (ADs) are the primary representatives between Regional Sailing Associations (RSAs) in their respective Areas, and the US SAILING officers, Board of Directors, House of Delegates, and committees.

3. Area Directors are voting members of the House of Delegates with the responsibility of communicating the opinions, needs and desires of the RSAs, sailing/yacht clubs, and sailors in his/her Area. In turn, any decisions or policies enacted are to be communicated to the RSAs, keeping them fully informed.

4. Area Directors are members of the Council of Sailing Associations (CSA) and serve on its executive committee. In addition, the Area directors may serve as liaisons to the Government Relations Committee.

5. Area Directors are vital to overseeing the appointment of individuals to represent Areas on US SAILING committees. (See US SAILING Regulation 6.03.)*

6. Area Directors are elected by the Council of Sailing Associations at the Council’s annual meeting. (CSA Bylaws, Article VI, 1.)**

* From the US SAILING Regulations:

6.03 APPOINTMENT OF AREA REPRESENTATIVES TO COMMITTEES
For selection of individuals to represent US SAILING Areas on committees or otherwise perform Area
functions including, but not limited to, Regional Administrative Judge, Area Race Officer, and Regional
Training Coordinator, and Area Representatives to the individual U.S. Championship Committees, the
following shall apply:
A. The committee chair shall nominate Area committee members.
B. The Area Director may name a candidate for consideration by a committee chair.
C. The Area Director shall be notified of the prospective selection in advance of notifying the candidate
and with sufficient time for the Area Director to adequately consider and comment on the
appointment.
